Thus far we’ve looked at the ant, the sparrow, the mountains, and the sea. On our final day of this mini-series, we look to the One by whom God created them all, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Creation is a triune effort; the Father makes all things through the Son and with the Spirit. Genesis 1 tells us that the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the primordial waters at the moment of creation. Likewise, John 1 tells us that “the Word,” Jesus Christ, was present and actively involved in creation, and through Him the Father made all things. While the Scriptures often attribute creation particularly to the Father, the whole Trinity is intimately involved and completely unified in God’s creative works.
Morning Prayer: “Lord, give me increase and progress in grace so that there may be more decision in my character, more vigor in my purposes, more elevation in my life, more fervor in my devotion, more constancy in my zeal. As I have a position in the world, keep me from making the world my position; may I never seek in the creature what can be found only in the Creator.”
Today’s Verses:
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” - Colossians 1:16-17
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” - John 1:1-3
“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” - Romans 1:20
We could spend a billion years trying to plumb the depths of the wonder and glory of God’s creation and still not scratch the surface. There is an infinite complexity and beauty to what God has made, from fractal art and architecture, to antennae galaxies, to supermassive black holes, to newborn babies. There is truly no excuse for growing bored in this life, so long as we have use of our senses.
I’m in Salt Lake City this week for work, currently typing this from a coffee spot full of hipsters in Park City (I’d post a pic but my phone camera is horrible; just trust me, it’s nice). The 40-minute drive up here from SLC boasts some of the most beautiful views on the planet; snow-capped peaks, rolling foothills, plunging canyons, and steep ravines. It’s impossible not to be captivated and mesmerized by the sheer creativity of God.
Had he made our world a flat, colorless, unadorned plain, we wouldn’t have known any better. He didn’t have to create colors, or seasons, or regions, but He did. The diversity of the natural world shouts of the incomprehensible beauty and complexity of the “mind” of God. There are colors, plants, and animals created by God that man will never even see, billions upon billions of untold stories of heroism, sacrifice, transformation, and brotherly love involving ants, gazelles, sharks, and bald eagles. Man may be the pinnacle of God’s creation, uniquely made to establish dominion over the natural world, but the earth and its creatures sing passionately along, exclaiming that He is Creator and King.
