Daily Devotion - Put The Witch To Death
In a moment of desperation, Saul goes to the medium at Endor.
“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors, and hail a materialist and a magician with the same delight.” - C.S. Lewis
Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*Note: If you have the required space, say these prayers out loud. In confessing these truths, we are not simply repeating mere facts for His sake, but training our hearts and minds to think in certain ways. The Bible says that the tongue is small but mighty, like the rudder of a ship that completely alters its course. We must diligently train our tongues to confess the glory and majesty of God.
Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 28
Summary: In 1 Samuel 28, Saul, fearful of the Philistine army and without guidance from God, seeks out a witch at Endor to summon the spirit of the prophet Samuel for guidance. Disguised, he meets the woman, who reluctantly summons Samuel’s spirit. The spirit of Samuel rebukes Saul for his disobedience, predicting the defeat of Israel and the death of Saul and his sons in battle. Devastated, Saul leaves, knowing his fate is sealed as foretold by Samuel.
Consider
v. 7: Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a medium at En-dor.”
The term “medium” in Scripture literally means an “intermediary” between the spirit world and ours. The Bible condemns this sorcery and explicitly prohibits attempting to speak to the dead (Exodus 22:18, Lev 19:31, Lev 20:27, Deut 18:10-11, and more).
