“Higher than every painter, higher than every sculptor and than all artists do I regard him who is skilled in the art of forming the soul of children.” - Saint John Chrysostom
Morning Prayer: “Almighty God, as I cross the threshold of this day, I commit myself, soul, body, affairs, friends, to thy care; watch over, keep, guide, direct, sanctify, bless me. Have mercy on me, and strengthen me to live boldly for You. Amen.”
Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 2
Summary: Hannah offers a prayer of praise and thanksgiving after the birth of her son, Samuel, expressing great joy and confidence in God’s strength and justice. Hophni and Phinehas, sons of Eli, are shown to be corrupt and sinful men who engage in wickedness and abuse their priestly roles in the temple. Eli confronts them but fails to take strong action, and the chapter concludes with a prophetic warning that God will judge Eli’s household for their sins. Samuel continues to grow and serve in the temple, gaining favor with both God and man.
Quick Hits For Those Short on Time
Rejoicing in God - Hannah is quick to acknowledge God’s answer to her prayer, giving Him all thanks and praise for the gift of her son, Samuel. We, too, have great reason to thank and praise Him, not only for His earthly blessings in this life, but also for the eternal blessings He has bestowed upon us through the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Contrasting Lives - While Eli’s sons lived lives of wickedness and corruption, Samuel’s exemplary, righteous living and obedience to God caused him to grow in godliness and bless those around him. This applies not only to how we raise children, but also to ourselves, as we choose daily between the paths that lead to life or death.
