Daily Devotion - You're a Wizard (Prophet), Harry (Samuel)
Samuel delivers a tough message to Eli.
“Parents, be exemplary. Your example may do much towards the salvation of your children; your works will more work upon your children than your words; your patterns will do more than your precepts, your copies more than your counsels.” - Cotton Mather
Morning Prayer: “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!” - from Psalm 90
Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 3
Summary: Young Samuel is serving in the temple under Eli when he hears God calling to him three separate times but believes the voice to be Eli’s. Eventually, Eli realizes that God is speaking to Samuel. God calls again and Samuel receives a prophetic message of judgment against Eli’s family due to the sin of his sons, Hophni and Phinehas, corrupt priests who abuse their priestly authority and engage in wickedness in the temple. Samuel is initially afraid to reveal this message to Eli, but Eli encourages him to speak the truth that he has received from God. Samuel establishes himself as a prophet and grows in stature and favor with God and the people of Israel.
